These eco-friendly brands are good for both you and the environment
Move over, Body Shop, Burt’s Bees, and Lush! Clear out your counter space for these other nature-loving skincare brands.
Well, maybe not completely because we love our Body Shop Rainforest Moisture Shampoo with its eco-conscious formula (says so on the bottle), and Lush’s no-packaging Bath Bombs. Still, here are some other green-friendly brands you should try out this year.
Hair
Giovanni
Giovanni prides itself on being “the first full range salon inspired hair care brand in natural product stores.” It brings an edgy chic to the herb-infused, flower power industry: we particularly love their 50:50 Balanced Hydrating-Clarifying Shampoo which uses hydrating botanical extracts to moisturise, clean, and manage frizz, especially for environmentally-stressed hair. It’s also lauryl and laureth sulfate free! Shop Giovanni products in Sasa stores or on Lazada.
Aveda
Aveda has a wide range of hair, skin, makeup, and fragrance products but bestsellers are its Invati ™ and Damage Remedy™ hair care products which address thinning and damaged hair respectively. Despite its oh-so-pretty packaging, Aveda believes in responsible sourcing, manufacturing, and packaging, and uses 100% post-consumer recycled PET. All products are also cruelty-free with certified organic ingredients that are naturally derived wherever possible from different habitats all over the world. Shop Aveda products at its stores in Pavilion, 1 Utama, and Midvalley Megamall.
Beyond
This Korean brand has an impressive list of eco-friendly attributes: it’s against animal testing, believes in minimal waste, and uses recyclable packaging with minimal designs. Its products are also created by its Eco Beauty Lab which carries out sustainable studies to use more organic, natural ingredients in its products. We especially love Beyond’s Nature Defense Shampoo with cranberry and blueberry extracts (yum!) though the brand also has skincare, makeup, and fragrance products. Shop Beyond products in Sasa stores.
Skincare
Neutrogena Naturals
Like its other beauty counterparts, Neutrogena Naturals is committed to producing cruelty-free products with naturally derived ingredients. It uses up to 60% post-consumer recycled content in its packaging and supports both clean water and renewable energy initiatives during sourcing and manufacturing. Take your pick from its range of facial products; we love the Purifying Facial Cleanser which contains natural salicylic acid. Shop Neutrogena Naturals products on Lazada.
Origins
It’s not hard to imagine that a brand named Origins uses ingredients that mostly originate from nature, but Origins is also committed to earth-friendly practises in its manufacturing and packaging. What’s more, the company has planted more than 500,000 trees around the world through its Plant-a-Tree programme which aids reforestation projects. Origins is known for its rich, active skincare products; we recommend the High-Potency Night-A-Mins™ Mineral-Enriched Renewal Cream, which you can shop at Sephora.
Innisfree
soompi.com
Korean brand Innisfree is known for its fun, brightly lit stores but it’s also a ‘naturalism’ brand that borrows inspiration from the pristine island of Jeju and advocates recyclable packaging, pure ingredients, and reliable research and development. We love their wide range of sheet masks (hold out for a sale when you can get 10 for RM100!) and the 6-in-1 super volcanic pore clay mask which clears your pores without leaving your skin dry. Shop at Innisfree stores in Paradigm Mall, Sunway Pyramid, Pavilion, Suria KLCC, and Sunway Velocity Mall.
Makeup
Physician’s Formula
You can’t go wrong with a name like Physician’s Formula – this makeup brand was created by allergist Dr. Frank Cardell as a gift of love to his wife who had sensitive skin. Today, it’s the #1 natural/organic face and eye makeup brand with no fragrances or PABA, plus it’s cruelty-free. Physician’s Formula is particularly well-known for its line of bronzers and face powders; shop in most Watson’s stores.
NYX
You already know that NYX is your go-to brand at Sephora ‘cos their lipsticks are half the price of everything else, but did you know that it’s one of the few drugstore brands that’s vegan-friendly and cruelty-free? NYX is also free of parabens and formaldehyde. We highly recommend NYX’s soft matte lip creams which you can try on in a variety of shades at Sephora.
Tarte
Tarte Cosmetics are vegan-friendly, cruelty-free, and formulated without parabens, mineral oils, phthalates, triclosan, sodium lauryl sulfate, or gluten. We love Tarte’s bestselling Amazonian Clay Matte Eyeshadow Palette which has long-lasting, ultra-pigmented Amazonian clay-infused colours. Shop the palette at Sephora stores.
Suncare
COOLA
An eco-friendly sunscreen? How ‘bout that! COOLA is a luxury line of suncare products that incorporated a Farm to Face® sourcing philosophy, using natural ingredients whenever possible. Products contain over 70% certified organic ingredients and are free of parabens, paba and phthalates. COOLA produces in limited quantities, allowing it to constantly reformulate, especially with its Plant Protection® system which strives to ‘achieve clinically tested, broad spectrum and antioxidant-rich protection while using fewer traditional actives’. Shop these amazing sun products on Lazada.
