You’ve turned your back on pigtails and scrunchies but they haven’t turned their backs on you.
If you think your space buns are totally fresh ideas, think again. Some of the hair trends you see today were borrowed from your childhood.
Which ones of these are your everlasting favs?
Pigtails
Who can forget “Hit Me Baby One More Time”? Admit it, you probably copied the look back in the day.
We couldn’t think of a better parallel of the 2010’s than Kylie Jenner’s rainbow-coloured dutch braids. Modern update, much?
Scrunchie
Hands up if you had an unhealthy addiction to scrunchies.
The jury’s still out on whether this trend is back, but we’re definitely seeing it around – in updated patterns like gingham, and more appealing shapes like bows.
Space Buns
The 90s knew this as Princess Leia buns, as seen here on Brandy, another icon from that decade.
The space buns we know today are different – usually messier or in a half-up style, like this Ariana Grande look.
We’ve all had this hairstyle at some point in our childhood because it mattered less to our parents what hairstyle suited our face, than what was easy to maintain – the bob with bangs!
Then in 2016, Taylor Swift sported a tousled, layered, and platinum blonde version, effectively one-upping 6-year old us.
Mini Braids
Remember tying mini braids in your hair?
Well, braided accents are still a thing, only edgier. Check out these close-to-the-scalp mini braids on Cara Delevigne and Sarah Hyland.
Long, Straight Hair
Long, straight hair was the coveted look of many 90s teens. We wanted Jeniffer Love Hewitt’s slick, long locks.
The look is still favoured, especially with its upgraded slicked back look as seen on Kendall Jenner.
Bandana
The one thing hip hop and pop stars agreed on when you were growing up: bandanas.
Whether you wear it with your hair up or down, bandana these days are folded thinner, mimicking headbands.
Flower Accessories
Flower hair accessories were as popular then as they are now…
…only better! We’ve updated the look with flower crowns and for an extra modern touch, metal!
