Branded hair products can hurt the wallet AND the hair. Why not take a break from those and try these homemade remedies for good hair?
Because professional hair products can really burn a hole in your wallet, we went searching in our kitchens (and on the interwebs) and discovered…
Homemade hair products – minus the chemicals and everything! Here are some recipes for your crowning glory. They’re easy to make and most importantly, made of all-natural ingredients!
1 Avocado
Not just delicious and healthful, avocados have many benefits for hair. Filled with proteins and good oils, it moisturises and smooths down frizz without adding weight to the hair. Make a hair mask by mashing up some avocado (amount depending on your hair length) and slather it on, making sure to cover every section. To do this better, you can separate your hair into four separate sections before smoothing it on, section by section. You can also add in essential oil scents for that aromatherapy and moisture boost. Leave it on for about 15 minutes before washing it off. Your hair will come out feeling super soft and moisturised.
2 Coconut Oil
Coconut oil works wonders for hair! If you experience excessive hair fall, try applying coconut oil. As it contains nutrients like lauric acid, it penetrates the hair and boosts hair health. Massage a teaspoon of coconut oil into your scalp with gentle pressure for 5 – 10 minutes a few times a week. This improves blood circulation and stimulates hair growth for thicker and healthier locks. Use it sparingly to prevent excess grease.
3 Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar thoroughly cleanses hair of product buildup, leaving it shiny. Mix one to two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to 200ml of water and massage it into your hair, especially the ends. Do this after shampooing and before conditioning your hair. If the smell bothers you, add in a few drops of your favourite essential oil to mask it. Once done, wash it off and experience shiny, clean hair.
4 Banana
Filled with the goodness of potassium and vitamins, this fruit helps keep the hair shiny and soft. Mash up a banana (and maybe even snack on another), then massage it into your scalp as your spread it onto your hair. Add on olive oil or coconut oil to the mashed banana to create a more spreadable texture. Leave it on for 30 minutes before washing it off.
5 Almond Oil
Loaded with fatty acids, almond oil works like a charm to strengthen and soften hair. As we lose our hair’s natural protective oils from daily activities like shampooing and swimming (in pools), it can get dry and brittle. Almond oil acts as a good substitute for those oils. Simply massage it into your hair and leave it on like a leave-in conditioner. You can even smooth out your tangles by combing them with a wide-toothed comb – the oil acts as a lubricant to ease stubborn tangles!
